New weather warning for strong winds issued by Met Office

Met Office issue yellow weather warning as Dorset prepares to be hit by Storm Diana

Gusts of up to 80mph are possible as the storm moves across the United Kingdom, with forecaster warning the gale force winds could lead to damage and cause disruption to transport networks.

Dan Harris, the Met Office's deputy chief meteorologist, said: "It now looks very likely that we will see a major change in the UK's weather early in the week ahead".

A status orange wind alert is in place for coastal counties in the south and west, with a status yellow warning for the rest of the country. Within the warning area expect gusts of 60mph.

"The rain warning applies to Scotland and the eastern central Scotland, where up to 50mm is expected to fall in localised areas".

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for wind for Carlisle and the western half of Cumbria for tomorrow.

Winds will be strongest along exposed coasts, where a few higher gusts are possible.

Further afield, Storm Diana has been named by IPMA (the official Portuguese Meteorological Authority) because of its expected impacts in the Azores on Tuesday.

Gusts of up to 80mph are possible as Storm Diana moves across the UK.

"There remains a small chance that this system will intensify as it moves northeastwards bringing even stronger winds to southwest England, Wales and on into northern England and southeast Scotland".

Ireland and Northern Ireland will likely suffer the most significant delays to travel during the morning commute, before winds push east during the daytime hours.

Strong southerly winds draw up more mild air with temperatures up into the mid-teens.
