Teen survives dramatic racing crash at 170 miles per hour

Macau GP: Hat-trick for Hickman as red flags end action

17-year old German racer, Sophia Floersch was involved in a heavy shunt in Sunday's Macau GP. Doctors say the seven-hour surgery went ahead as planned and was completed without any issues.

Doctors added that her limbs were still active and that her vitals were fine after the surgery in a press conference and Floersch is set to remain in hospital for the next two weeks while she recovers. Her head was compressed by the impact and that compressed the spine, which is why she had the fractures.

Frits van Amersfoort, the principal of Floersch's team Van Amersfoort Racing, told the BBC she was travelling at around 276 kph (171 mph) at the time of the crash. "If she had hit the barrier it would have gone a lot worse". All five victims were immediately taken to the hospital where Floersch was found to have fractured her spine.

The teenager was conscious when taken to hospital in the former Portuguese colony from where she tweeted that she was "fine" and would undergo surgery on Monday.
