The deadliest wildfire in California's history has been contained

The California town Paradise was destroyed by wildfires

Authorities said the blaze was 95 percent contained two weeks after it swept across the Sierra Nevada foothills and burned more than 150,000 acres, leaving 475 people still missing just in that area, and 560 total across the state. It dropped an estimated 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain over the burn area over a three-day period without causing significant mudslides, said Hannah Chandler-Cooley of the National Weather Service.

The so-called Camp Fire all but obliterated the mountain community of Paradise, 175 miles (280 km) northeast of San Francisco, on November 8, killing at least 84 people and destroying almost 14,000 homes.

Though he has declined to characterize how much of the area has been searched, Honea said that highly populated areas and places that were identified as possibly having deceased people have been fully searched and search teams are now spreading out into less dense areas of devastation.

Cal Fire said that the remaining uncontained fire "is isolated in steep and rugged terrain where it is unsafe for firefighters to access due to the heavy rains". Despite the inclement weather, more than 800 volunteers kept searching for remains.

A deadly wildfire is almost contained after several days of rain in Northern California, but searchers are still completing the meticulous task of combing through now-muddy ash and debris for signs of human remains.

The firefight was boosted last week from the first significant winter storm to hit California.

The blaze that ignited November 8 destroyed more than 13,000 homes. "Collaboration btwn federal, state & local partners is a priority when it comes to helping folks get back on their feet".

A separate fire in Southern California that struck Malibu killed another three people. Majority are elderly retirees.

With more people returning to their homes and mandatory evacuations lifted, the shelter sites will transition into Glenn County Fairgrounds or Butte County Fairgrounds sites.

"I really appreciate your efforts to do whatever you can for many people who have lost everything and members of family" in the northern California blaze, said Johnson, who said her nephew is also one of the victims in the blaze.

"So far we've been seeing about a quarter-inch of rain falling per hour", he said.
