Three US Service Members Killed in Afghanistan Blast

Three US service members killed in Afghanistan

The deaths are the latest in a growing toll on US forces in Afghanistan following the death of an army Ranger following an operation against al Qaeda militants in Nimruz province on Saturday.

Three US service members have been killed and three others wounded in an explosion near Ghazni in Afghanistan.

Three US service members and an American contractor were also wounded in the blast, the military said. The wounded were evacuated and were being provided medical care, Mendie said. Ghazni has become the most hotly contested province in Afghanistan, which is no small feat given the Taliban's mastery in strongholds such as Helmand and Kunduz.

In June of 2017, the Taliban claimed an attack where an Afghan soldier shot and killed three US soldiers in the Achin district of the eastern Nangarhar province.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, the Taliban abducted 21 passengers from two vans that were traveling through the northern Sari Pul province, according to Habibullah Mujahidzada, a district police chief. "We've lost some troops doing it over the last several months, as you know", but Afghan troops since 2014 have taken the lead in the fighting and have suffered far more casualties.

That attack came a few days after a suicide bomber killed 55 religious scholars gathered in the Afghan capital, Kabul, to celebrate the holiday marking the birth of Islam's prophet, Muhammad.

The Taliban have intensified attacks on Afghan forces even as the United States ratchets up efforts to engage the militants in peace talks.

The bombing happened in an area where U.S. Special Forces have been working with Afghan commandos.

Worldwide forces have also suffered from so-called insider attacks in recent months, in which Afghan soldiers or police have opened fire on them. While in Afghanistan, CBS News joined USA troops in an operation to clear an area of ISIS fighters.

The US forces are part of the Nato-led Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, which has more than 16,000 personnel.
