Trump threatens to permanently close Mexico border after clashes

Mexico's Milenio TV showed images of migrants climbing over fences and peeling back metal sheeting to enter. Mexican police officers in riot gear stopped many, but those who continued toward the fence met USA border agents, who sprayed some with tear gas.

He could not see from his position if the migrants had managed to get across the actual border.

Honduran Ana Zuniga, 23, also said she saw migrants opening a small hole in concertina wire at a gap on the Mexican side of a levee, at which point USA agents fired tear gas at them.

Junior, a migrant from Honduras, waves the American flag while standing with other migrants at the US-Mexico border fence.

On Twitter, Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, wrote that the "tear gas across the border against unarmed families is a new low".

But a clash between US Border Patrol agents and members of the migrant caravan in Tijuana made things even more hard for people returning back to the US from Mexico this weekend.

US officials have said for months that they were working with Mexico to find solutions for what they have called a border crisis.

During this ordeal, the San Ysidro Port of Entry, located near San Diego, was at a stand still. "The vast majority of people we're dealing with are adult males".

Tijuana declares 'humanitarian crisis' seeks help from UN

Irineo Mujica, who has accompanied the migrants for weeks as part of the aid group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, said the aim of Sunday's march toward the US border was to make the migrants' plight more visible to the governments of Mexico and the U.S.

The mayor of Tijuana said on Sunday that he would not let the migrants' actions damage the city's relationship with its neighbors across the border. She had signed up for an interview with a USA asylum officer, the first step in the asylum application process - but the surge of migrants with the caravan meant that she would be waiting for weeks.

Mexico has no intention of deploying its troops to curb the influx of migrants arriving at the country's border with the United States, the Mexican Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

But Mexico's incoming government, which assumes power December 1, denied that it is willing to let USA asylum-seekers stay there pending the outcome of their cases in US immigration courts, which could take years.

"We can't have all these people here", Mujica said. "Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the United States of America". Residents of Tijuana work, study and visit the United States each day, and the border closures affect them, too, Juan Manuel Gastélum Buenrostro said on Twitter on Sunday. Democrats and even some lawmakers in Trump's own party have resisted his calls to fund his proposed border wall.

The fate of the migrant caravan has become a heated political debate in the United States, with Trump and his supporters claiming that secure borders take priority over accepting asylum seekers.

Mexico is on track to send a total of around 100,000 Central Americans back home by the end of this year.
