"We need to be demanding and here I want every player to be at that high level". We had to stop it and start climbing.

However, he was left on the bench for the trip to Bournemouth, as Arsenal looked to make it 17 games unbeaten in all competitions.

"We want to create that kind of atmosphere so it's about both how we finish in the table and also in terms of creating a team both individually and collectively that has motivation".

Emery said he has met Wenger once since being appointed his replacement and while he "has a lot of respect" for his predecessor, he insists changes had to be made.

Arsenal lost to Manchester City and Chelsea in their opening two league games of the season and haven't lost since but face Spurs and Manchester United back-to-back at the beginning of December in their biggest tests since the opening games.

Some of the devil was in the detail.

In an interview with Spanish media outlet Marca, Arsenal head coach Emery said: "I met once with him, and little else".

"We started with an Arsenal that barely won against the top six, even though this year we haven't done so yet either, but while also having serious difficulty winning away from home, something we have already improved upon".

"What I do is work. I gave him [Guendouzi] the chance first, which I was delighted about, but now he's not playing as much and Lucas is".

"I told the players "we are starting at ground zero". I am more tactical.

Unai Emery will be looking to put the winless run behind him and secure a win over Bournemouth to regain control in the race for top four.

Bournemouth will have been grateful for the recent global break, a chance to regroup and watch the Uefa Nations League following two back-to-back defeats in the league before a crucial home fixture against Unai Emery's Arsenal. "It's getting harder and harder to get there".
