US reimposes Iran sanctions in 'maximum pressure' campaign

Khamenei Trump

The United States announced a new raft of sanctions on Iran on Monday and threatened further action.

The Trump administration said it has taken its final steps to remove the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement. This is unsurprising, as the European Union strongly opposed US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, and has always said it would continue trading with Iran. China, India, South Korea, Turkey, Italy, the United Arab Emirates and Japan have been the top importers of Iran's oil, while Taiwan also occasionally buys Iranian crude.

The sanctions target Iran's energy, financial and shipping sectors and are aimed at crippling the country's economy following US President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

The U.S. reimposed oil and financial sanctions against Iran on Monday, significantly turning up the pressure on Tehran in order to curb its missile and nuclear programs and counter its growing military and political influence in the Middle East. Telecommunication Minister Mohammad Javad Azeri Jahromi and his deputy, Hamid Fatahi, both tweeted about the attack on Monday - the same day US sanctions on the country once lifted by the nuclear deal resumed.

The US Embassy hostage crisis took place about nine months after the start of Iran's Islamic revolution which saw the Ayatollah Khomeini brought to power.

He said Washington believed the Iranian nation had lost their confidence in its clerical rulers.

He said the sanctions had cost Iran billions of dollars in oil revenue since May.

The threat of sanctions has seen the Iranian rial plummet and business owners have said they are afraid of what they will do to the country's economy.

"In close coordination with our European partners, we are monitoring developments and examining options on how to protect the economic basis of this agreement and protect our companies", government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

The US expects to have reduced Iranian oil exports by more than 1 million barrels even before Monday's tranche of economic penalties. But US bullying is backfiring, not just because JCPOA is important, but because the world can't allow Trump & Co.to destroy global order.

Switzerland said it was holding talks with the United States and Iran about launching a humanitarian payment channel to help food and drugs keep flowing to Tehran.

"Constantly they are sending us messages saying, 'Let's sit and negotiate.' Negotiations for what?" said Mr Rouhani.

"Sanctions waivers being given to key purchasers of Iranian oil, most alarmingly China, give Iran a financial reprieve, and should be eliminated as soon as possible", Rubio said in a press release on Friday. Thank you, President Trump, for this historic move.

European leaders and representatives from Russian Federation and China defended the deal and urged Trump to allow them to continue to uphold it.

Waivers were also issued to allow European firms to continue conversion work on two of Iran's nuclear facilities.
