USA offers new $5 mn reward for Mumbai attackers

Remembering 26/11

"All countries must uphold their global obligations to take action against this United Nations sanctioned terrorist group and its leaders", said Nathan Sales, State Department's coordinator for counterterrorism in his brief remark. "Thank you", she said.

On November 26, 2008 (26/11) terrorists from Pakistan unleashed a wave of violence across Mumbai that lasted 3 days and played out on news channels around the world.

"It is an affront to the families of the victims that, after 10 years, those who planned the Mumbai attack have still not been convicted for their involvement", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

Ten years on, the United States has offered a new $5 million reward for the capture of the remaining attackers and called on Islamabad to cooperate with the hunt for the planners of the assault. "We once again call on Govt of Pakistan to give up double standards and expeditiously bring perpetrators of horrific attack to justice." the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"Our citizens died together".

Earlier on Monday, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, in a statement released by the US Department of State, announced that the US will reward up to Dollars five million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of any individual involved in planning or facilitating the 2008 attack. Extracts from an article written on this occasion by Kia Scherr, the co-founder of a charity "One Life Alliance" and a family member of U.S. victims in this tragedy, was also read out.

Mumbai's police force will remember the more than a dozen officers who were killed, many while fighting the militants, at a ceremony starting at 09:30 am local time.

The murders at the Chabad center occurred one day after residents were taken hostage inside the building.

Arun Jaitley, the Finance Minister, on the tenth anniversary of Mumbai terror attacks wrote on Twitter, "We stand resolute & united against terrorism".

"Pakistan is showing little sincerity in bringing perpetrators to justice".

Headley, whose original name was Daood Sayed Gilani, is serving a 35-year prison sentence in the U.S. for his role in the Mumbai attack and in a terrorism conspiracy against a Danish newspaper.

The centre promised to continue its efforts in bringing justice to the families of the victims and the soldiers who lost their lives fighting the terrorists.
