USA police fire tear gas at migrants trying to cross from Mexico

The leader said his policy was 'America first'

"After being prevented from entering the Port of Entry, some of these migrants attempted to breach legacy fence infrastructure along the border and sought to harm CBP personnel by throwing projectiles at them", said Sec.

The migrant caravan at the U.S. -Mexico border consists of mostly men who are not "true asylum seekers", former Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan said Monday, adding that he agrees with President Donald Trump's threat to shut down the border if Mexico doesn't deport the migrants back to their home countries.

Trump previously indicated that the "whole" of the USA southern border may close, should the Mexican government not be able to get control of the migrant caravan situation.

Irineo Mujica, who has accompanied the migrants for weeks as part of the aid group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, said the aim of Sunday's march toward the US border was to make the migrants' plight more visible to the governments of Mexico and the U.S.

"This morning, CBP was forced to close the San Ysidro Port of Entry to ensure public safety in response to a large number of migrants seeking to enter the US illegally".

Take a look above.

An average of 70,000 vehicles and 20,000 pedestrians cross from Mexico to the United States at San Ysidro each day, according to the U.S. General Services Administration.

The chaos comes as US and Mexican officials wrangle over the issue of migration and discuss how to deal with asylum-seekers waiting in Mexico.

Some 9,000 members of the migrant caravans are camped in Baja California along the U.S. -Mexico border, plotting their attempts to enter the U.S., according to Mexican press accounts. U.S. border police then fired rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowd of men, women and children.

At that point, before the group had reached the border, U.S. Customs and Border Protest officers who had gathered on the other side of the fence launched canisters of what a Reuters photographer identified as tear gas.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement that USA authorities will continue to have a "robust" presence along the Southwest border and that they will prosecute anyone who damages federal property or violates US sovereignty. "Congress, fund the WALL!" "He did not say welcome them when they had the right papers".

The ministry said Mexico is committed to protecting the human rights and security of the migrants and reiterated that tight cooperation was needed to deal with the migrant situation "with a focus on shared responsibility". Others continued to approach the border and were repelled by more tear gas. Despite Trump's promise to protect Christians and their values, some suggested the president hasn't done a good job of defending the core Christian value of welcoming the stranger.

Castillo said he was leaving "to avoiding getting beaten".

Mexican authorities intervened, prompting a rush toward the border by some people, before United States agents fired tear gas.
