Brother of Slain CA Officer Reacts After Police Arrest the Murderer

The emotional statement was delivered moments before authorities announced that they'd nabbed Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 33, for allegedly killing Singh's brother, Newman Police Department Corporal Ronil Singh on December 26.

Richardson said Singh was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and riding his jet ski.

As IJR News reported, authorities said 33-year-old Corporal Ronil Singh, a Fiji native who had immigrated to the U.S.to become a police officer, was shot and killed early Wednesday when he was pulling someone over for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Detectives also arrested Gustavo Arriaga's girlfriend and another of his brothers, accusing them of helping Arriaga evade police.

California Governor Jerry Brown disputed Christianson's claims that officials could not report Arriaga to immigration authorities.

The sheriff leading the investigation into the shooting death of a California police officer took aim at so-called sanctuary laws that limit cooperation with US immigration authorities.

"He came to America with one goal, and that was to serve this country", Richardson said.

Authorities arrested Bernabe Madrigal Castaneda, Erasmo Villegas, Maria Luisa Moreno, Adrian Virgen, Erik Quiroz, Ana Leyde Cervantes, and Conrado Virgen Mendoza. The officer called out "shots fired" over the radio, police say, and was found at the scene with gunshot wounds. Christianson said. "It's a conversation we need to have".

President Trump has cited the killing as a justification for his proposed wall on the border with Mexico.

Christianson said Arriaga entered the country illegally, has two prior arrests for DUI and has known gang affiliations.

According to Blue Lives Matter, Facebook has informed multiple users that posts declaring "Arriaga" to be an "illegal immigrant" or "illegal alien" violate the platform's community rules for "hate speech".

The shooting on Wednesday came amid a political fight over immigration, with President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats at odds over funding for a border wall that has forced a partial government shutdown.

Christianson said the case highlighted the dangers of a California law passed in 2017 that placed limits on how closely law enforcement can cooperate with federal agents seeking to deport illegal immigrants arrested for crimes. The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department was scheduled to hold a press conference at noon, .

Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson, whose agency is leading the investigation, confirmed this to reporters in a press conference on Friday. "Authorities telling ABC News, all of them - as well as Arriaga - in the US illegally".

Singh was the first officer to die in the line of duty, Chief Randy Richardson said. "He believed in this community", the chief said at a Friday night community vigil honoring the officer.
