China says Canada breached agreement over Huawei arrest

China warns of ‘serious consequences’ if Canada doesn't release detained Huawei executive

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng on Sunday urgently summoned US Ambassador to China Terry Branstad to make a solemn representation and "strong protests" against the detention of a top executive of leading Chinese tech giant Huawei in Vancouver, Xinhua news agency reported.

Le added that the USA should drop its arrest warrant against Meng and told Ambassador Branstad that China's response will depend on what actions the us decides to take.

China also urged the United States to "take immediate measures to correct wrong practices, and revoke the arrest warrant against the Chinese citizen".

Meng Wanzhou was arrested at Vancouver airport as she changed planes on December 1, accused of violating American sanctions against Iran. Huawei has said it complies with all laws and rules where it operates, including export controls and sanctions of the United Nations, the USA and European Union. Meng and Huawei are also accused of misleading American banks about its business dealings in Iran.

On Saturday, Le warned the Canadian ambassador there would be severe consequences if it did not immediately release Meng.

In a company presentation from 2013 that was released with the Canadian court documents, Huawei said it communicated with USA government agencies on a "day-to-day" basis to obtain what it called "professional guidance" on trade compliance.

The hearing in Vancouver is the start of a long legal process in Canada that could end with Meng being sent to the United States to stand trial.

"Skycom was Huawei", the prosecutor alleged.

Meng stated Huawei's engagement with Skycom was a normal business cooperation, when Skycom was in fact entirely controlled by Huawei.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended Canada's arrest of Meng, saying politics played no part in the decision.

CTV News has learned that the home on West 28th Avenue near Crown Street is one of two luxury properties owned by Meng Wanzhou and her husband.

Meng, who father is the founder of the company, returns to court on Monday to continue seeking bail.

Huawei, the biggest global supplier of network gear for phone and internet companies, has become the target of USA security concerns because of its ties to the Chinese government.

A judge in the US District Court for the Eastern District of NY issued a warrant for Meng's arrest on August 22, it was revealed at the hearing Friday.

Meng's detention in Canada came on the day of a summit between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, at which they agreed to a truce in their tit-for-tat tariff battle.

"The U.S. has been pressuring the other "Five Eyes" to limit the use of Huawei technology", the article said.

The surprise arrest raises doubts about whether the trade truce will hold and whether the world's two biggest economies can resolve the complicated issues that divide them. "The company believes the Canadian and U.S. legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", Huawei said last week.

Canadian officials have declined to comment on Chinese threats of retaliation, instead emphasizing the independence of Canada's judiciary and the importance of Ottawa's relationship with Beijing.

The US and Canadian ambassadors were summoned over the weekend by a Chinese vice foreign minister, who demanded that the US withdraw its arrest warrant.

On Face the Nation Sunday morning, CBS's Margaret Brennan asked Rubio if he planned to introduce legislation in January that would enact that ban after Meng was arrested in Canada.
