Computer virus freezes South Florida Sun Sentinel

Computer virus hampers San Diego Union-Tribune's Saturday delivery

As of Saturday afternoon, Tribune suspected the cyberattack to be of foreign origin, according to the Los Angeles Times, though the precise motive remains unclear.

In South Florida, delivery of the New York Times and the Palm Beach Post was also affected because the Sun Sentinel also prints their newspapers here.

"We believe the intention of the attack was to disable infrastructure, more specifically servers, as opposed to looking to steal information", the LA Times quoted a source with knowledge of the situation as saying.

The attack led to delayed distribution of The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun and other titles belonging to Tribune Publishing.

According to Light, the virus impacted computer systems of Tribune Publishing Co. that are still shared by the U-T and the Los Angeles Times, which were purchased by Los Angeles billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong in June but haven't yet transitioned from the old systems. When some L.A. Times readers called to inquire about their print edition, the customer service phone lines were on the fritz.

For Tribune subscribers, "there is no evidence that customer credit card information or personally identifiable information has been compromised", Kollias added.

"Every market across the company was impacted", said Marisa Kollias, spokesperson for Tribune Publishing.

Tribune Publishing discovered the presence of malware Friday that affected some systems used to publish and produce newspapers across the company, Kollias said. For print subscribers that did not receive Saturday's paper, they will receive the paper with their regularly scheduled delivery of the Sunday edition.

Papers that share the same production platform in LA, including the west coast editions of the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, were also hit.

The Tribune's Freedom Center printing press also prints the Chicago Sun-Times. "Thank you for your patience and support as we respond to this ongoing matter". Those newspapers will be delivered today, the company said.

Jeff Light, editor and publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune, began Saturday morning by issuing an apology. But the papers continue to use some of Tribune's systems.
