He said they were caused by a mechanical problem in Softbank's 4G telecommunications systems.

Millions of people have been having problems with their mobile phones this morning, after the O2 network went down. "Ericsson sincerely apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused".

"During the course of December 6, most of the affected customers' network services have been successfully restored", Ericsson explained.

"The cause of today's network issue is in certain nodes in the core network resulting in network disturbances for a limited number of customers across the world, including in the UK", Ericsson UK and Ireland CEO, Marielle Lindgren, said in a statement.

O2 customers are struggling to access the internet and other services after a massive data failure this morning.

LONDON/ STOCKHOLM/ TOKYO-Sweden's Ericsson apologized and said it was working hard to fix a software glitch that was responsible for millions of smartphone users in Britain, Japan and other countries losing Internet access on Thursday.

It comes as O2, Tesco Mobile and Sky Mobile customers across the United Kingdom experience problems with mobile data services. "We fully appreciate it's been a poor experience and we are really sorry". The machines have been covered up until the issue is fixed.

The fragility of the increasingly connected systems that keep modern, Western nations running was underlined Thursday when major telecoms network O2 ceased to transmit mobile data from around 0530 GMT.

Many users will have received an alert to their handsets warning of the drop in service.

The problems mean that the companies that share its network - such as GiffGaff, Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile - are also being hit by the problems.

As LTE networks become increasingly saturated, mobile network operators are planning for the 5G future.
