Moscow Looks Back George HW Bush A Steady Hand While Soviet Union Fell

Former President George H.W. Bush has died at the age of 94.

Former President George H.W. Bush has passed away at the age of 94. In recent years, Bush used a motorized scooter or wheelchair for mobility. He outlived both Gerald Ford, who died in 2006 at 93, and Ronald Reagan, who died in 2004 at 93.

The son of a senator and father of a president, Bush was the man with the golden resume who rose through the political ranks: from congressman to United Nations ambassador, Republican Party chairman to envoy to China, CIA director to two-term vice president under the hugely popular Ronald Reagan.

The statement concludes: "Our hearts ache with his loss, and we, with the American people, send our prayers to the entire Bush family, as we honor the life and legacy of 41".

Former U.S. President Barack Obama tweeted his condolences, saying "America has lost a patriot and humble servant ..."

Mr Bush served as the 43rd vice president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. The two were married 70 years.

Before Bush's military career concluded in 1945, he'd flown 58 combat missions during World War II.

As one of his first major decisions, Bush chose to remove Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega - a former USA ally turned global drug lord - from power.

Months into his presidency he was faced with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and he oversaw the removal of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega.

Bush faced a serious challenge when Iraqi President Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990.

After retiring from public life, Bush fulfilled a wartime pledge to one day jump out of a plane for fun and famously went skydiving on his 75th, 80th, 85th and 90th birthdays.
