Google Year in Search 2018: Top-trending queries revealed

This year's trending searches show South Africans keen interest in local celebrities, news and events, with six of the top 10 trending search terms being local.

Interestingly, Google's "Year in Search 2018" reveals that "what is section 377" searches topped the "what is..." search category.

Meanwhile, scandals also made for heavy search volumes.

The most-searched movie in the USA was Black Panther, followed by Incredibles 2, Deadpool 2, and Avengers: Infinity War. The top "what is" search in the U.S. was "what is Bitcoin". The next two most popular search topics concern two musicians who died suddenly at a young age: Avicii, who committed suicide in April, and Mac Miller, who died of a drug overdose in September. The company also mentioned that "How to.' and "What is.' are among the most interesting searches".
