Huawei CFO arrested, faces extradition to U.S.

Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse, a Republican member of the Senate Armed Services and Banking committees, said Huawei is an agent of China's communist party and applauded Canada for the arrest.

Canadian authorities have arrested Huawei's chief financial officer, Wanzhou Meng. The company previously said that it complies with all applicable laws everywhere it operates, "including the applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US, and European Union". It is not clear if Meng's arrest is connected to the USA probe into Huawei.

Canadian authorities have arrested the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies in Vancouver, B.C. Canadian Justice Department press representative Ian McLeod confirmed Wanzhou's court hearing is scheduled for Friday.

"As there is a publication ban in effect, we can not provide any further detail at this time", department spokesperson Ian McLeod said in a statement to the newspaper.

"She is sought for extradition by the United States", he explained.

As a result, USA officials have worked to prevent US telecom companies from selling Huawei smartphones and installing Huawei equipment. Its devices have come under scrutiny from U.S. authorities over spying fears, and the arrest of its CFO has the potential to further inflame tensions between the two countries amid a mounting trade war.

In April, the Wall Street Journal reported the U.S. Department of Justice was investigating whether Huawei violated U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Meng Wanzhou, daughter of company founder Ren Zhenfei, and a vice chair of Huawei Technologies.

Outside of the arrest itself, very little information about the case is being released at this time, in large part because a publication ban that was requested by Meng.

Huawei, which sells telecommunications and computer electronics equipment, is the world's second largest maker of smartphones, behind South Korean giant Samsung.

In May, the Pentagon banned the sale of Huawei phones on military bases.

Fellow Chinese technology giant ZTE had similarly been removed from the US trading blacklist at the start of previous year by the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security following the company's guilty plea to illegally exporting products to Iran.

Huawei's relationship with the USA just took a turn for the worse. Mark Warner conveyed "grave concerns" over the possibility that the Chinese government might be using Huawei equipment to spy on and interfere with foreign governments. Huawei has denied the links.
