Israeli police recommend indicting Netanyahu in telecom case

Israel Police Recommend Indicting Benjamin Netanyahu In Corruption Probe

The attorney general will now decide whether to bring indictments in the case, which centres on regulatory benefits allegedly granted to telecommunications firm Bezeq in exchange for positive coverage from a related media company. The two investigations underway at the time involved gifts Netanyahu received from Arnon Milchan and James Packer, and Netanyahu's alleged attempt to establish another quid-pro-quo agreement with Yedioth Aharonoth publisher Arnon Mozes, in which he offered to push through a law that would weaken rival daily Yisrael Hayom in exchange for more positive coverage in Yedioth.

Some analysts have said Netanyahu could call a snap vote in light of the legal proceedings against him.

While Netanyahu was questioned as a witness and not a suspect in the submarine case, the accusations against his lawyer and others in the investigation have only added to the pressure the prime minister is facing.

The irony of that evening meeting in December 2016 must haunt the suspects named in the police recommendations on Sunday, including Netanyahu and his wife Sara, and Elovitch and wife Iris.

Earlier this year, investigators also recommended that Netanyahu be tried for allegedly taking almost $300,000 worth of gifts including expensive cigars and champagne from wealthy friends including Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and Australian billionaire James Packer.

Two key figures have turned state's witnesses in the case, including former media adviser to the Netanyahu family Nir Hefetz.

In a joint statement with the Israel Securities Authority, police said they had also found sufficient evidence to charge Bezeq's controlling shareholder with bribery as well as other officials at the company. Those benefits included restricting competition in the Israeli ground-line phone market, among other decisions taken by Netanyahu in the years he served as communications minister.

Netanyahu served as communications minister from 2015 to 2017. "Israel must go to elections".

Netanyahu's colleagues in the ruling Likud party have lined up behind up, attacking outgoing Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh for releasing the recommendation on his last day on the job. Netanyahu now leads a coalition with a razor-thin 61 seat majority in the 120-seat parliament. The appointment of Alsheikh's potential successor is being held up after a government-appointed committee rejected his candidacy.

The next legislative poll is scheduled for November 2019. His wife already faces trial in a separate case for allegedly misusing state funds.

Sara Netanyahu has long faced allegations of extravagant living and abusive behaviour.
