Migrants at Mexico border face an uncertain future on their own

Wilson Romero left and Daniel Montes both from Honduras arrive at a bus terminal early

"San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said, "It was Border Patrol agents" effort and valued partnership with the Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles that helped us identify a risky convicted felon moving amongst the migrant caravan, '" Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Press Secretary Tyler Houlton said in a Friday statement.

Ten Central American women taking part in the migrant caravan camped on the US-Mexican border said Thursday (Nov 29) they were starting a hunger strike to pressure American authorities to let them apply for asylum.

Events leading to the arrest of the Honduran suspect began around 9:30 p.m.in an area about four miles west of San Ysidro, and about 400 yards north of the barrier between the USA and Mexico, according to the federal criminal complaint. They were forced back by US Border Patrol agents, who fired tear gas and rubber bullets.

"I didn't really have much of a plan when I left Honduras: everyone said that we would be able to cross the border - I thought it would be easier", said 29-year-old Yocelyn Alvarado as she picked up her 3-year-old son Fernando to stop him wondering into vast puddle of stinking floodwater and sodden trash. Homeland Security officials have said as many as 600 people in the caravans have criminal records, but have not specified how they know, or given many details. "DHS will not tolerate illegal or forcible entry into our country", Houlton said in the statement.

Many want to seek asylum in the United States, but inspectors at the San Ysidro border crossing are processing about 100 claims a day, meaning they will likely have to wait weeks or months.

California assessing legal action against use of force on Mexico border

After calling the migrant caravan a "humanitarian crisis", Mayor Juan Manuel Gastélum said he can not continue to fund the shelters for migrants without federal support.

Thousands of caravan members have been arriving in recent week - almost 6,000 people have been staying at a sports complex in Tijuana packed into a space adequate for half that many people.

"I'm not going to break public services to solve this problem", Gastélum told Fox News.

"In those six hours that the border was closed, we lost approximately 129 million pesos (US$1.4 million)", according to Gastelum.

He pointed out that Tijuana residents, many of whom have taken to the streets to protest the caravan's presence, are suffering financially. There are also at least three confirmed cases of tuberculosis, four cases of HIV/AIDS, and four cases of chickenpox, a spokesperson with the health department told Fox News. "That's not fair. How do you think people from Tijuana feel towards those people who are making problems?"
