Nats set to add Corbin on 6-yr deal

Bryce Harper

In Corbin, the Nationals added arguably the most sought-after free-agent starting pitcher on the market this offseason.

Phillies rumors regarding Patrick Corbin began to swirl late Tuesday afternoon when word of a decision being imminent swept across Twitter.

Corbin is coming off of a career year in which he went 11-7 with a 3.15 ERA with 246 strikeouts in 200 innings for the Diamondbacks.

Corbin, 29, was among the most-dominant all-around pitchers in the game last season.

What it would cost to land Bumgarner in a trade is not clear, but with the team missing out on Corbin - and watching him sign with the division rival Washington Nationals - the pressure is certainly on for the front office to get something done.

Per MLB.com's Jamal Collier, Corbin's deal with worth six years and $140 million.

Keuchel, Eovaldi and Happ are the consensus top starters remaining on the market, with the possible exception of Japanese southpaw Yusei Kikuchi, who was posted by the Seibu Lions of Nippon Professional Baseball yesterday.

Ranger Suarez isn't, and may not ever be, ready to be a guy who can take the ball every five days and turn out quality starts.

Corbin's contract would include $10 million in deferred money, one of the people said. The number of early deals in the offseason is also significant, as Corbin becomes the team's fifth addition since the start of the playoffs.

This past season for the Houston Astros, the 30-year-old starting pitcher struggled on the mound as he dealt with numerous injuries. It'll be even easier then to see why Corbin signing with the Nationals was a tough break for Boston despite looking like a victory on the surface.

The off-season's top starting pitcher may be off the market for the Yankees and the rest of baseball, with the Winter Meetings just a week away, expect NY to be involved in the Harper Bazaar as well as anything regarding Manny Machado - they do choose to spend this winter.

Dallas Keuchel could be a solid option for the Sox to sign. Bumgarner has really made a name for himself in the postseason, posting an impressive 2.11 ERA in 16 games, helping the Giants win three World Series.
