Ohio State coach Urban Meyer retires as state's highest-paid public official

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer will step down after the Rose Bowl

Ohio State's athletic department says it will hold a news conference to announce the coaching transition from Meyer to Day at 2 p.m. ET. A shocking blowout loss at unranked Purdue on October 20 pushed Ohio State to the fringe of the national championship chase and prompted all sorts of questions about Meyer's future.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Taking Meyer at his word that he is fairly certain he will never coach again means forgetting he's been down this road before only to come back.

It's been a tumultuous season for Meyer, who was suspended for the first three games for mishandling problems with former assistant coach Zach Smith. But as ESPN reported in 2015, the coach also left "myriad off-field issues", including more than 30 arrests of players during Meyer's six-year tenure. He coached wide receivers in 1987.

Smith said Meyer will be staying with the university in a new capacity, working coaches and athletes, but he was not specific about the role. Turning a blind eye cemented Meyer as one of the college football coaches with bad reputations. The Buckeyes went 3-0 under Day, including a win over TCU in Arlington, Texas, before Meyer returned to the sideline September 22 against Tulane. Asked if he would definitely return to Ohio State next year, he answered, "Yes". Though Meyer had known about accusations against Smith, which dated back years, he kept him on the staff and at one point told the press that he didn't know as much about the situation as was later revealed.

Day was becoming a hot name in coaching circles and his ability to step in and guide the Buckeyes during Meyer's suspension demonstrated his ability as an up-and-coming coach.

"It was interesting because I've never had him as a head coach, so my first thought was, 'I wonder how this will work out?' but I definitely think he can do it", Murphy said when Day was named interim earlier this year.

But the loss to Purdue weighed too heavily and Ohio State finished at No. 6 in the playoff rankings.

Everyone had to chase Meyer, who would win two titles, and that chase led to to the hire of Nick Saban, who arrived in the SEC two years after Meyer got to Florida. After stepping down at Florida because of stress-related health concerns, he took the Ohio State job before the 2012 season after Jim Tressel was forced out for lying to the NCAA amid a memorabilia-for-tattoos scandal. Because Day coached with former Meyer assistant Steve Addazio at Boston College, he already had familiarity with Meyer's offensive scheme and terminology, which helped him hit the ground running in Columbus last season. He will be walking away with $38 million left on his contract.
