It's been clear for a while now that 2019 will be the year of 5G, and it's little surprise at this point that the Snapdragon 855 will support "multi-gigabit" data speeds on 5G networks as they light up around the country.

Samsung will probably rely on Qualcomm for its Snapdragon 855 chipset, who's details were leaked prior to the imminent announcement. It's still relatively early days for software and services fueled by machine learning, but the shift in the industry seems nearly palpable at this point.

Also getting more smarts is the image signal processor for taking photos and videos using Snapdragon 855-powered smartphones.

Another feature the Snapdragon 855 can tap into is Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Sensor. 5G is also created to offer lower latency, lower power consumption, and more bandwidth/capacity.

Meet the processor that's going to power numerous flagship Android smartphones in 2019.

The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform will be manufactured on a 7nm process, as previously disclosed. (It's unclear if this pattern will continue with the S10.) Samsung is at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019 where the Snapdragon 855 has been unveiled, which we're taking that to mean the company is nearly certain to include the new Snapdragon on its next flagship. And while that will enable you to enjoy the faster network speeds that 5G promises, that will depend on 5G wireless networks coming online, something that will happen throughout 2019.

One of the biggest features for next year's phone is the ability to use 5G. This under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor should be very secure as it takes a 3D image of the finger and won't be affected by oily or wet fingers. The feature is also available in phones like Vivo's Nex S and Xiaomi Mi 8, but those phones aren't officially supported in the U.S. Therefore, in theory, the Snapdragon 855 could be quite a bit faster than the A12 Bionic, but that remains to be seen when devices with it ship in the first half of 2019.

Earlier this year, Qualcomm announced the world's first 5G modem, the X50, which is supposed to increase download speeds by up to 20x over what most mobile users now experience.

Exactly when LG will announce its next flagship phone is a little up in the air, but we may see it at Mobile World Congress and it's likely to feature the Snapdragon 855.

The forthcoming 855 has a whole host of other improvements over the current Snapdragon 845, including dedicated AI processing and XR (extended reality) processing for the future of mobile device capabilities.
