Rescue Underway After U.S. Warplanes Crash off Japan's Coast

One Marine Dead Five Still Missing After Midair Collision Near Japan

Early reports that surfaced on Twitter report that an F/A-18 (unspecified variant) and a C-130 crashed into the sea with a total of seven crewmembers on board. Search and rescue missions were being led by the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces, ABC News reported.

The recovered crewmember was being evaluated by medical authorities at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, according to a III Marine Expeditionary Force statement issued just before 9 a.m. local time. Search and rescue operations were underway at the scene. It's unclear if USA military officials are assisting with the search.

U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni is located in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is home to the sole forward-deployed Marine squadron of F-35 stealth fighter jets. Naval Institute (USNI), at least one person has been rescued so far in what it called a collision between a KC-130J tanker and an F/A-18D fighter jet. "Japan will respond appropriately once the details of the incident are uncovered".

They also said they were unsure how the mishap may have occurred but none suspected foul play. Two aviators were on the F/A-18 Hornet, while five Marines were on the KC-130.

A Marine spokesman released a statement saying one of the personnel from the planes "is being evaluated by competent medical authorities".

However, refueling is a unsafe operation, Baker said. In July 2017, a KC-130T crashed in MS while flying from Stewart Air National Guard Base in NY to Naval Air Facility El Centro in California, killing all 16 Marines and prompting the military to ground many other C-130s afterward.
