Sam Kerr named fifth best player in football’s Women’s Ballon d’Or

Ballon d'Or: Luka Modric breaks decade of Ronaldo and Messi dominance

Luka Modric was announced the 2018 Ballon d'Or victor ahead of five-time winners Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on Monday.

Remember the Real Madrid star has won a lot of individual awards already this year, including the Golden Ball at the 2018 World Cup and the FIFA Best Player award.

The reaction, save for the Ronaldo and Messi loyalists, has been largely positive to the newly-crowned best player in the world.

"As a kid we have dreams".

"2018 is a dream year for me", Modric said.

So, although very rare, there was a reason for Ronaldo and Messi fans to team up to air their frustrations at the organisers of the award.

French World Cup star and Paris Saint-Germain teenage striker Kylian Mbappe came fourth, leaving Messi in fifth position.

Croatian playmaker Luka Modric was declared the victor for the 2018 Ballon d'Or award on Monday, December 3, in Paris. Honoured by one and all, Hegerberg stood on the stage, ready to be greeted by former France worldwide David Ginola and French DJ Martin Solveig.

While the blunder does not seem to have changed the overall standing of the top 5, it is still disconcerting and could easily have affected the outcome in any other year.

Named the Norwegian Sportsperson of the Year in 2016, Hegerberg added another feather in her hat on Monday as she raised her Ballon d'Or in the air, grinning with pride.

Hegerberg is a three-time Women's Champions League victor with Olympic Lyonnais and scored a tournament-record 15 times last season.

France Football and Solveig have brought a bad name for Women's Ballon d'Or in its inaugural edition. "I want to end this speech with a message to all young girls in the world". The suggestion clearly made Hegerberg uncomfortable.

But Varane has played a crucial role in winning the two biggest trophies in world football in 2018 and if that isn't enough for a defender to get Ballon d'Or recognition, nothing will be. "It's all about how we respect women's football. I let them know, quite clearly, what I found wasn't working".
