The federal transportation department is releasing $5 million in emergency relief funds to help road and bridge repairs in Alaska following Friday's magnitude 7.0 natural disaster.

Wait 1 second to continue.

Traffic outbound from Anchorage on the Glenn Highway was at a standstill after a 7.0-magnitude natural disaster caused damage in the Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018. The 5.7 aftershock arrived within minutes, followed by a series of smaller quakes.

The tsunami warning for Southcentral Alaska including Kenai, Kodiak and the shores of Cook Inlet was canceled around 10 a.m. local time.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted that US President Donald Trump had been briefed on the quake and was "monitoring damage reports".

Collapsed roads, cracked buildings, shelves and cupboards emptied of contents: a powerful 7.0-magnitude quake rocked southern Alaska on Friday morning, creating panic in Anchorage, the main city of this American state, yet accustomed to earthquakes.

"Many homes and buildings are damaged", the police department said in a statement. Cracked and collapsed roads, damaged buildings now plague parts of the state.

Quake damage also was preventing Alaska Railroad trains from making the trek between Anchorage and Fairbanks. "But we know that a tragedy of this magnitude is going to require outside resources", she said.

Gov. Bill Walker has issued a disaster declaration.

She said it was taken at the exit ramp from W International Airport Road to Minnesota Drive, just east of the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and southeast of an area called Earthquake Park. In Alaska's largest city - with a population of about 300,000 - airports, hospitals, emergency services and most businesses were operating. They added that the epicenter of the quake appeared to be located 7 miles (11 kilometers) north of Anchorage.

"It's one of those things where in your head, you think, 'OK, it's going to stop, ' and you say that to yourself so many times in your head that finally you think, 'OK, maybe this isn't going to stop, '" he said.

"Many roads and bridges are closed". It and the tsunami it triggered claimed about 130 lives.

This photo provided by David Harper shows merchandise that fell off the shelves during the quake.

"Even when people were initially concerned, people who might have been reaching for the last item, looked over and saw someone else and said, 'Yes, we are sharing this with you, '" he said.
