Trump expected to pick State spokeswoman for UN ambassador

Heather Nauert

The decision could be announced as early as Friday, the source said, requesting anonymity.

If confirmed, Nauert, 48, would succeed Nikki Haley, who said in October she would be leaving the United Nations post at the end of the year.

In 2017, Veteran Fox News correspondent and anchor Heather Nauert was named as the Trump administration's new lead foreign policy spokesperson.

Numerous reports in the USA media - the first of which appeared in Bloomberg news - said Nauert would be nominated Friday, citing sources close to the matter.

Experience matters less to the President, an avid fan of Fox News, than Nauert's loyalty to the White House, the fact that she's a woman and her ability to be a polished proxy on television, according to sources familiar with his thinking.

Nauert is now the spokeswoman for the State Department.

Haley was outspoken and forceful during her brief stint at the UN.

If Ms Nauert passes the Senate confirmation and subsequently assumes the role, her top priority will be to maintain sanctions on North Korea, which her predecessor managed to rally global support for a year ago when Kim Jong-Un was conducting his ballistic missile testing. But she did not agree with Trump on some issues, including Russian Federation sanctions and the significance of the world body itself.

It remains to be seen whether the United Nations envoy position will remain Cabinet level. "People don't know very much about her", said Richard Gowan, a senior fellow at the UN University.

"She would like to go out with something", said a Security Council diplomat of the US-drafted resolution.

The Illinois native would follow in the footsteps of Haley, a former governor of South Carolina; Samantha Power, a Pulitzer Prize victor; Susan Rice, a Rhodes Scholar; and former National Security Council and national security officials such as Madeleine Albright. Haley argued for a Cabinet-level post after, she said, initially being considered for the secretary of state job.

After Haley announced that she'd be stepping down this past October, several outlets reported that Nauert was expected to be shortlisted for the role.

Two administration officials confirmed Trump's plans.

Nauert, 48, has been touted for the post since November.

That means Nauert would wield less clout than her predecessor, both at the United Nations and within the administration, and as a result, would pose nowhere near the challenge to national security adviser John Bolton, White House chief of staff John Kelly or Pompeo. "Grenell is known to be hard to work with".

Haley took a particularly forceful posture against Russian Federation, assailing the Kremlin at United Nations security council meetings over its aggression in Ukraine and support for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, even as Trump remained reluctant to criticize Vladimir Putin.
