Trump says likely to meet Kim in Jan or Feb

South Korean train crosses DMZ into North Korea

"We have a good relationship", he said.

The president tells reporters that there are three sites under consideration, but he's not identifying them.

He adds that at some point he'd like to invite Kim to the United States.

"Through the railways that will be connected in one, the South and North will prosper together and peace in the Korean Peninsula will become firmer", South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said during a ceremony at Dorasan Station near the border. He said, "We are getting along very well".

Trump's warmth toward Kim came following rocky relations with the North Korean leader in which the two engaged in a war of words before appearing to eventually come to terms, with Trump saying earlier this year that he and Kim "fell in love" after exchanging letters.

North Korea had entered into agreements with regional powers in 1994 and in 2005 to dismantle its nuclear program in return for economic benefits and diplomatic rewards, but those deals broke down after Pyongyang clandestinely continued to pursue building weapons of mass destruction.

The statement said that both Xi and Trump agreed that "great progress has been made with respect to North Korea".

The North's leader Kim Jong Un, during a summit with the South's President Moon Jae-in in April, said the North's railway infrastructures are "embarrassingly" dilapidated, praising the South's high-speed railway system.

After whistling twice, a South Korean train engine pulling six rail cars slowly departed toward North Korea's Panmun Station, near the town of Kaesong, where the rail cars will be reconnected to a North Korean engine.

Differences over how to denuclearize the North have kept the 2 countries from deciding the date and venue of the next summit.

"We're not having missiles launched, there haven't been any nuclear tests", Pompeo noted, citing a change in behavior from North Korea, which conducted a series of missile tests in 2017 that alarmed its closest neighbors - and had the USA concerned that Pyongyang was developing the capability to strike any site on the continental U.S.

"South Korea and the USA share a consensus that it is desirable to discuss a bigger (denuclearization) timetable at the second U.S".
