US Investigating CenturyLink Internet Outage, 911 Failures

Technical problems at a Louisiana-based service provider Friday disrupted 911 access in multiple states across the country — including Massachusetts officials said

Widespread outages across the country have been reported since earlier Thursday morning.

Several Boise customers told the Statesman Friday morning that their service has been restored, including an employee of the Idaho Department of Labor.

Beyond the company's tweets, CenturyLink has not issued any official statements on the outage.

But while the US ISP is working on restoring service, things may not be going as smooth as the company was hoping for.

Linda Johnson of CenturyLink corporate communications emailed The World-Herald on Thursday evening to say the company's technical teams would continue their work until service is restored.

Police and fire departments throughout the state took to social media to alert followers to the problem, which was causing some 911 calls made from landlines and cellphones to not go through to the appropriate dispatchers.

A nationwide outage affecting CenturyLink customers temporarily impacted 911 calling capability for cellphones across the country and in MA, state police said.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai called the outage that began December 27 "completely unacceptable" because people who need help couldn't use the emergency number.

The head of the Federal Communications Commission said he has directed the FCC's public safety staff to launch an investigation into the nationwide outage.

Thousands of customers around the country, including Louisiana and Wyoming, are still experiencing outages Friday morning, according to Newsweek.

Callers received a fast busy signal during the outage.

CenturyLink calls itself "the second largest US communications provider to global enterprise customers".

There were reports of ATM machines not working in Idaho and Montana. The website Down Detector says it primarily affected western states, but emergency service providers on both coasts reported disruptions.

While a nationwide CenturyLink outage affecting 911 service also hit here in Washington, Whatcom County is unaffected.

"Its breadth and duration are particularly troubling", he said.
