What’s Happening With 'Friends' on Netflix?

The publication posted a screengrab from the streaming service which indicated that the show would be available until 1 January 2019. Netflix has canceled three of its five Marvel shows in the last two months, the most recent being "Daredevil" last week (Disney owns Marvel).

There won't be a break from "Friends" on Netflix after all. Netflix, after all, pays a hefty sum for the licensing rights to Friends, which is a top performer on the service.

And Netflix's chief content officer himself has gone on the record about the matter, with Ted Sarandos telling The Hollywood Reporter that Friends' "departure is a rumor". The show's listing on Netflix indicated that the show would leave the service as of January 1. The mega-popular sitcom achieved new life on the streaming service, tapping into old fans' nostalgia and gaining a wave of new, young Gen Z fans who were *gasp* born after it aired.

For all the talk of Netflix being able to survive mostly on the strength of its original content, there was certainly a significant amount of uproar yesterday when it looked like Friends was leaving the streaming service's library.

However, it may not be all smooth sailing for the Friends Netflix rights in the future. This wasn't entirely out of the blue-WarnerMedia intends to launch its own streaming service at the end of 2019, and most assumed that Warner Bros TV-owned Friends would be a major part of that service at launch. It's possible that "glitch" was a premature sign of things to come.

They also put out a Tweet saying, "The Holiday Armadillo has granted your wish: "Friends" will still be there for you in the USA throughout 2019".
