White officer charged with murder in death of black neighbour

Ex-Dallas Cop Who Killed Man in ‘Mistaken Apartment’ Case Indicted for Murder

Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer who authorities say shot and killed a man in his own home, has now been indicted on murder charges.

Guyger was arrested and initially charged with manslaughter in September in connection with the shooting of 26-year-old Botham Jean, a native of the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia who was employed at the accounting and consulting firm PwC in Dallas.

I want to thank the Dallas community for the persons who have been rallying with us during this most hard time, my county St Lucia, the entire population of St Lucia has been on alert with the expectation that the grand jury would have returned an indictment for murder.

I want to thank the DA's office, particularly DA Faith Johnson, for the work that her staff have put into gathering evidence and presenting to the grand jury in order to return such an indictment.

"At the moment of the shooting it was a knowing ... offense", Johnson said.

It's worth noting that legal some experts think it would have been better to move for a manslaughter indictment which is much easier to get a conviction for that one for murder, especially for an officer or ex-officer. Amber Guyger's lawyer is speaking out and blaming the indictment on politics and vindictive emotion. She said most officers are good, but in this case, "We're talking about bad cops that go out there and do things against the law".

The killing of an unarmed black man by a white officer in uniform sparked demonstrations in the Texas city, with protesters calling for Guyger, a four-year veteran of the Dallas police force, to be charged with murder.

"We recognize and understand the national discord regarding the relationship between law enforcement and the communities we serve", Hall said. She supports restructuring the citizen review board, expanding bias training for officers and taking input from employees and the community. Guyger was eventually fired by Dallas police.

Guyger lived in Apartment 1378 of the South Side Flats complex close to Dallas Police headquarters, according to Guyger's arrest warrant affidavit, as cited by Dallas Observer.

"I truly believe that she inflicted tremendous evil on my son".

Johnson also spoke about why it took her office two months to bring the case in front of a grand jury. She reported the shooting to dispatchers and told responding officers that she had mistaken Jean's apartment for her own. He was seated in his own apartment.

She opened it to find a figure standing in the darkness and said she pulled her gun and fired twice after the person ignored her commands.

She claims she didn't know that she was in the wrong apartment until she turned the lights on to try and call 911. Guyger was arrested September 9 on suspicion on manslaughter, and was released from the Kaufman County Jail after posting a $300,000 bond.

Johnson will not prosecute the case. The family has filed a lawsuit against Guyger and the city of Dallas.
