Wilder, Fury draw in epic heavyweight showdown

Tyson Fury knockdown

Deontay Wilder has retained his unbeaten record and the WBC world heavyweight title after a split decision draw with Tyson Fury in Los Angeles.

The showdown between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury had no victor as one judge said Fury won, one said Wilder, and the third ruled it a draw.

Deontay Wilder enters tonight's contest sporting a ideal professional record of 40-0.

Fury will look to claim the only belt he has not held when Wilder puts his WBC strap on the line at the Staples Center in a bout between two undefeated fighters. A right hook to the top of Fury's head in round nine dropped the big man after Fury was showboating, daring Wilder to hit him. But a huge straight right from Fury gave the champion something to think about, and was perhaps the Englishman's best punch at that point.

Wilder will likely have to rely on speed to prevail having weighed in lighter than he did in his last fight against Luis Ortiz, the champion coming in at 212.5 pounds. He came close, dropping Fury in the ninth round and again in the final round, but Fury showed the same kind of heart that helped him overcome the nightmare of the past three years since he won three major titles and the lineal title three years ago this week in a monumental upset of longtime champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Wilder agreed with Fury, explaining that "I 100% agree with that".

There is, however, doubt as to whether Wilder would take a rematch.

The champion scored two knockdowns in the contest but struggled throughout to find the target against the tricky and tactically astute Fury, who used his superior boxing skills to control proceedings for long spells.

The Manchester man then turned his attention to fellow Brit Anthony Joshua, calling him a "chicken" before ending his post-fight interview by shouting "God bless America".
