Cleveland Browns Hire Freddie Kitchens As Their New Head Coach

Daryl Ruiter-92.3 The Fan

Though the team has yet to announce it, there are several reports that Freddie Kitchens will be the new head coach for the Cleveland Browns.

Under Kitchens, who took over after the firing of former coordinator Todd Haley, Cleveland was reinvigorated. Kitchens began the year as a running backs coach for the Browns, and has been coaching in the National Football League as an assistant since 2006. Gregg Williams was promoted to interim head coach, while Kitchens was bumped to offensive coordinator. The Browns finished the year with a 7-8-1 record, their best since 2007.

As the team's success grew, Kitchens never campaigned to be Cleveland's coach but leading a team was always a goal.

Before Kitchens took over the offense, the Browns ranked 29 in Football Outsiders' opponent-adjusted passing metrics.

Kitchens became a fan favorite in Cleveland after the Browns' offense improved with him calling plays down the stretch of the season. The Browns instead went with a younger, hungry, first-time head coach, and tried to get ahead of the curve on getting the "next big thing".

Under the direction of Kitchens, rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield flourished, completing 68.4 percent of his passes with 19 touchdowns, eight interceptions and five sacks while leading the Browns to a 5-3 finish.

There is also no good guess at who could serve as special teams coordinator under Kitchens either.

What's not as well-known is pretty much anything else about the Browns' new head coach, who started the season in relative obscurity as an assistant under Hue Jackson.
