Have you seen 'Bird Box'? Netflix says basically everyone else has

Signage is displayed during the'Bird Box after party in the Roosevelt Ballroom during AFI FEST 2018

However, that sort of statistic is mostly meaningless, because it's coming from Netflix.

The streaming service on Friday said more than 45 million "accounts" have watched the Sandra Bullock-led film in its first week of release, the "best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film", the company boasted in a Tweet. It made someone refer to star Sandra Bullock as the "lady from Bird Box, " causing everyone who would instead refer to her as the lady from Speed (and, you know, everything else) to feel like a fossil. If in the latter you could not make any sounds, for fear of drawing monsters to your location, in Bird Box you're not allowed to open your eyes while you're out of your house.

Does this mean that 45 million Netflix subscribers have seen Bird Box? The 45 million accounts Netflix claims have streamed Bird Box would amount to 32.8%.

It would be hard, for example, to say what the activity of 45 million accounts equates to in traditional box office terms. But it's also important to note that Netflix is counting by accounts.

For one thing, the number isn't verified by any other source. Fan reactions to the film's premise, cast, and tense moments lit up the internet over the holidays as Bird Box became an end-of-year social media phenomenon.

"I don't believe that films that are given token qualifications, in a couple of theaters for less than a week, should qualify for Academy Award nominations", Spielberg told ITV News. If it's a good show, you deserve an Emmy.

One of the problems that Spielberg sees with streaming is that it has effectively forced studios into bankrolling strictly tent-pole features while eschewing mid-budget and lower-budget fare, which allow more room for creativity.

According to screenwriter Eric Heisserer, the monsters were nearly shown on screen, but the decision was ultimately made to exclude them.
