Huawei Demotes Employees Responsible for Tweeting from an iPhone

China Takes Wind Out Of Apple iPhone Sales

Two Huawei employees who sent a message from the Chinese telecom firm's Twitter account using an iPhone device have been punished, a memo says.

According to the memo, the blunder showed "procedural in compliance and management oversight", as a result of which the two employees responsible for the mistake have been demoted by one rank. Once pay is restored it will not increase again until at least twelve months have elapsed.

The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before some folks were able to screenshot it.

Reuters also reported that Chen Lifang, the corporate senior vice president and director of the board, said the snafu "caused damage to the Huawei brand". "Apparently, some sort of 'VPN problems" with a computer forced the employees to use an iPhone with a roaming SIM card to send the message out at midnight.

Huawei in December said it expects to see a 21 percent rise in revenue for 2018 despite some of its telecommunications equipment being banned in several countries due to security concerns. These punishments seem rather harsh, but we're now witnessing an escalating economic war between the United States and China, with Apple and Huawei being the top tech companies in each country that are hurting the most. The background is the fact that China blocked the access to Twitter as well as Facebook and Google.

One of the pair was head of Huawei's digital marketing team, according to the memo circulated among the public and government relations team as well as a number of employees in the consumer business unit.

iPhones are made by Apple, one of Huawei's biggest competitors in the smartphone market. The tweet was marked "via Twitter for iPhone". However, the tweet went viral on the microblogging platform for the wrong reason.

The slip-up comes as tensions run high with Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou (孟晚舟) facing extradition from Canada to the U.S. over alleged bank fraud. This Sputnik writer knows which they would take (it's not the Apple).

Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of nationalistic tabloid Global Times, was mocked online past year after he used his iPhone when expressing support for Huawei and domestic peer ZTE Corp.
