Kyler Murray wants $15 million from A's to stick with baseball

The summit comes a day before the deadline to declare for the National Football League draft, which the A's believe Murray plans to do. The A's are considering offering the Heisman Trophy victor more guaranteed money to honor his baseball deal and not declare for the NFL draft, league sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.

That would be taking special treatment to a new level, but MLB thinks that highly of Murray and wants him in baseball. Murray, who was incredible in leading Oklahoma to the Playoff, already signed a minor league deal with the Oakland A's after being drafted ninth overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. Along the way, he became the second straight Oklahoma quarterback, joining Baker Mayfield, to win the Heisman. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the team will meet with Murray today to try and convince him to choose baseball.

Oakland would have to add Murray to the 40-man roster to make such changes.

According to multiple reports, Murray is asking for a significant increase in guaranteed money from Oakland - as he should, given he has incredible leverage right now - although the number is in flux.

So while Murray's signing bonuses in both sports could be similar, the risk/reward for his future earning potential surely will factor into his decision.

If Murray picks football, he will have to forfeit his almost $5 million signing bonus from Oakland. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported the league will consider allowing Murray to sign a major-league deal, which would allow the A's to exceed the cap that is put on recently-drafted players. At 5-foot-9, he would be the shortest quarterback in the National Football League since Doug Flutie, at 5-10.

In fact, if Murray believes he'll be a first-round pick in April's National Football League draft - and there's reason to believe he could go as high as No. 1 overall - Murray would earn more money from his National Football League signing bonus than the $4.66 million he's assured with the A's.
