Leishman makes move in Sony Open golf

Danny Lee has made the cut in his first tournament of the year

Last season's Barracuda Championship victor was making seemingly everything at the Sony Open in Hawaii, including a clutch 20-foot birdie on the 13th hole Sunday to join the lead. "It felt easy out there".

"Kuch is playing well, so I feel like I've got to get out there and make some birdies if it's not too windy", Putnam said.

"Certainly previous year was disappointing, but to win two out of three events is insane to comprehend", Kuchar said.

"Apparently, I need to go buy a lottery ticket today", Reavie said.

Putnam damaged his normal driver just after Christmas, and because the year's first two events are in Hawaii, equipment companies don't send their trucks, which allow players to easily replace or fix clubs at tournament sites, he had to make do.

Putnam, who played college golf at Pepperdine and claimed his first PGA Tour victory previous year in the Barracuda Championship, capped his 67 with an eight-foot birdie putt on the last hole.

And when he tapped in for a birdie and a four-shot victory over Andrew Putnam, he looked back across the sky at a rainbow stretching across the sky.

Kuchar was at 14-under 126, matching the lowest 36-hole score of his PGA Tour career. "It is the golf I like to play to stay out of trouble", he said.

Putnam stayed within striking distance without playing his best. Just needed to make some better swings.

At the 477-yard par-4 13th, the Indian's tee shot went 269 yards to the right rough, his second shot went 180 yards to the right front greenside bunker, and his sand shot went 29 yards to the green where he secured a two-putt for a bogey. He won the Match Play Championship and the Memorial in 2013. Davis Love III, one of four 50-plus-year-old in the field, earned a solo seventh-place finish another shot back.

The next challenge is winning, and it helps to have gone through the experience last November. "For me, I've never had a cushion like this coming down to the last (hole)".

It was a hard day for 11-time PGA Tour champion Spieth, who had four bogeys and just one birdie to be tied for 127th and 12 shots off the pace. He also beat Patrick Reed and Ian Poulter, who are both only 15 years younger than Love but also played in the Ryder Cup.

Super-consistent Marc Leishman is on track for another big US PGA Tour payday but the Sony Open title appears nearly out of reach going into the final round.

The Sony Open in Hawaii is contested at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
