Netflix password sharing could be a thing of the past

New software unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas could monitor and eliminate account sharing, according to FOX News.

In a press release, Synamedia said its system could help content providers "combat the rapid rise in account sharing between friends and families and turn it into a new revenue-generation opportunity". The factors that they consider include the location of the user, the device being used, and the local time.

The UK-based company Synamedia says it created an algorithm that looks for patterns among users that indicate a shared password.

"A typical pattern would be you have a subscriber that is simultaneously watching content on the East Coast and West Coast of the United States", chief technology officer Jean-Marc Racine told The Verge.

Media research firm Magid found that 26 per cent of millennials share passwords for video streaming services. "It's a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream", said Racine.
