Netflix's 'Bird Box' Faces Backlash Over Train Derailment Footage

Netflix Has No Plans To Cut ‘Bird Box’ Scene Despite Outcry

Netflix's post-apocalyptic survival film is drawing criticism for using footage of a real fiery train disaster but the streaming giant has no plans to remove it.

The footage was taken from a train derailment in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec in July 2013.

The tragedy occurred when the brake system of a train failed, allowing the train to roll downhill into the town and derail.

The company estimated that 80 million households will have watched the movie starring Sandra Bullock in its first four weeks, sparking a viral reaction online.

The movie has not arrived without controversy, including how the streaming giant had to warn people not to do the "Bird Box challenge" involving potentially risky actions while blindfolded, and YouTube later banned videos to that effect.

So far, the footage has been noticed in the Netflix original film Bird Box as well as the series Travelers.

"I don't know if this is happening all the time, but we are looking for assurances from Netflix that...they are going to remove them", Morin told The Globe and Mail. "You can be sure we are going to follow up on this, and our citizens are on our side".

The company released its massively popular dystopian movie "Bird Box" late in the fourth quarter, which helped attract a record 8.8 million new paid streaming customers in the period, but investors appear to have factored that into their valuation, pushing Netflix shares up more than 50 percent since late December.

Netflix licensed the footage of the disaster from the stock image vendor Pond 5 and used it in "Bird Box" in an early TV news montage to set up its horrific premise. Netflix had no comment. The production company's president Carrie Mudd told the Canadian Press it got the imagery from stock footage supplier Pond5, whose spokesperson Tina Witoshkin told BuzzFeed News the footage "was taken out of context and used in entertainment programming".

Producers of another Netflix show, however, announced they would be replacing the same footage used in an episode after outrage.

The "Bird Box Challenge" trend has gotten people injured trying to do real-world activities while blindfolded, and now it appears the film itself is getting scrutinized in a bad way.
