"And the Democratic Party is not going to succeed that way".

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has secured a seat on the powerful House Financial Services Committee, which oversees Wall Street, the Federal Reserve, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez has previously called for a 70 per cent top tax rate and for the biggest banks to be broken up.

Tulsi Gabbard, and Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley have also reportedly been tapped for the committee by Democratic House leaders, and a vote finalizing their appointments is expected within days.

The powerful committee also oversees the US housing market, insurance and global finance sectors, among other areas.

Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated Crowley in the Democratic primary last June, talked about how she became disenchanted by politics but then became energized after President Trump's election.

After Anderson Cooper called Ocasio-Cortez's 70 percent top marginal tax rate suggestion and other bold progressive proposals a "radical agenda" during the "60 Minutes" interview, the NY congresswoman responded, "If that's what radical means, call me a radical". "I understand guys like this like the back of my hand".

"I'd say we'd be taxing 70% of Trump's income, but he probably hasn't made more than $10 million in years", she wrote, "and that's the real reason he's hiding his taxes".

A few sentences later, she said, "So enjoy being exhausted for the next two years while we run train on the progressive agenda".

In the interview, Ocasio-Cortez insisted that the richest Americans had once been subject to a 90 percent tax rate - although she did not mention that liberal tax deductions of the era had alleviated that burden.
