Schauffele ties course record and wins at Kapalua

After holing out for two eagles, and closing with four birdies over his last five holes for an 11-under 62, he chose to wait inside the scoring trailer to see if it would be enough to beat Gary Woodland in the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Sunday.

Following a bogey at the first hole that dropped him six strokes off the lead, Schauffele rebounded with four birdies over five holes.

After a frustrating front nine, Woodland kicked off his birdie run with a chip-in at the 11th, and later capped his day with another birdie at the par-five 18th to move to 12-under 134 at the Kapalua Plantation course on the island of Maui. He holed a 107-yard wedge for eagle at No. 12. After Woodland birdied 15, too, Schauffele edged ahead again with a birdie at 17, where an aggressive second shot left him a nine-footer for the first birdie of the day on the hardest hole on the course.

Woodland chipped to just outside three metres at the last and had a putt to force a playoff, but it leaked away to the right and he gave up another 54-hole lead, the seventh time he has led into a final round on tour and lost. He started the final round with a three-shot lead and closed with a bogey-free 68.

But he added: "I don't think anyone could have lived with Xander today". "I knew it was going to be a birdie-fest at the end". This is the second time in three seasons that he has at least two victories. He is three strokes behind front-runner Gary Woodland, thanks to the work he did last month in the South Florida wind and something he calls a "low driver".

Northern Ireland star McIlroy, a four-time major champion, had pulled level after his fifth birdie of the day at the 14th - coupled with Woodland's lone bogey of the day at 12.

It still will depend on Woodland, a three-time victor on the PGA Tour who wants more victories to show for his improved all-around game. I had killed the par 5s all week this week, which is what you've got to do out here. "And unfortunately, I didn't get it done".

Xander Schauffele, who flew under the radar until an eagle at the ninth, slipped through for victory and his course record-equalling 62 was 10 strokes better than McIlroy's round.

Fourth-ranked Justin Thomas recorded a 65 and was five shots back in third, while third-ranked Dustin Johnson, the defending champion, totaled 67 and was eight back in a tie for fourth with Marc Leishman of Australia, who had a 71, and eighth-ranked Rory McIlroy, who finished at 72.

Woodland, 34 qualified for the event in capturing the Phoenix Open and his third PGA Tour success while the scholars of the pro game will recall the Kansas-born Woodland led the opening two rounds of last year's PGA Championship before eventually securing a share of 6th place.

Brooks Koepka closed with a 69 to finish 24th, meaning Justin Rose returns to No. 1 in the world.
