Trump offered Pelosi and Schumer Skittles, Butterfingers and Baby Ruths

Senate Republicans have stated they won't pass any spending legislation unless President Donald Trump agrees to sign it, but Trump has said he won't sign any bills that don't provide $5.7 billion to fund a barrier at the U.S. -Mexico border.

By the end of this workweek, this would become the longest partial government shutdown in US history and many federal workers would miss their first paychecks.

Trump, in a speech focused on what he described as a "growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border", appeared to reference parents such as Mazin and Golvach.

U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark, of the 5th district, rejected Trump's labeling of illegal immigration as a "national crisis".

Seeking to keep up pressure on Trump and the Republicans, Pelosi said the House would begin passing individual bills this week to reopen some federal agencies, starting with the Treasury Department to ensure Americans receive their tax refunds. We can reopen the government and continue to work through disagreements about policy. And she said no.

They are particularly concerned about the administration's talk of possibly declaring a national emergency at the border, seeing that as an unprecedented claim on the right of Congress to allocate funding except in the most dire circumstances. We want to start with the facts.

"I just addressed the nation on Border Security".

Schumer continued to say Trump slammed his hand on the table, something GOP leaders say did not happen.

"I think certainly I have expressed more than a few times the frustrations with a government shutdown and how useless it is", Capito said Tuesday.

The president also remained equally defiant in a lunchtime huddle with Senate Republicans on Wednesday, insisting GOP lawmakers are unified behind him even as some GOP senators push for the shutdown to end. He blamed illegal immigration for what he said was a scourge of drugs and violence in the USA and asked: "How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?"

Democrats in response accused Trump appealing to "fear, not facts" and manufacturing a border crisis for political gain. But I know that the president has the authority to do it in certain situations if it's declared essential to national security. But he made no mention of such a declaration Tuesday night.

Trump has said he can relate to the plight of the federal workers who aren't getting paid, though he acknowledged they will have to "make adjustments".

"Yes", Schlapp said when pressed by CNN's Jim Sciutto about taxpayers paying for the wall. Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham has suggested a compromise that would include wall funding as well as protecting some immigrants from deportation.

Schumer said Trump "just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) go way back: the two have socialized and worked together since Pelosi first entered Congress in the late 1980s.

"They don't come in through checkpoints, they come through areas where you have hundreds of miles without walls and without barrier or without strong fences", Mr. Trump said at the Capitol.
