Xi Jinping says Taiwan "must and will be" reunited with China

Xi'We have achieved great victory on defeating any pro-independence or separatist activities

"Taiwan will never accept the "one China, two systems" formula, and the vast majority of Taiwan's people are firmly opposed to the approach designed by Beijing", she said, noting that a speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) earlier in the day proved that "Taiwan's misgivings are correct".

Xi Jinping has insisted that the island would ultimately be reunified with the mainland, and the issue should not be left for future generations to deal with.

China reserves the option of taking "all necessary means" to achieve reunification with Taiwan, the leader asserted.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, center, listens to a speech during an event to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Message to Compatriots in Taiwan at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.

Taiwan split from China in a civil war that brought the Communist Party to power in China in 1949.

"Chinese people don't attack other Chinese people". It was caused by Beijing conducting missile tests over Taiwan's outlying islands in a failed attempt to sway voters not to re-elect Lee Teng-hui, whose high-profile visit to the USA had infuriated the mainland government.

"It's rather empty and doesn't have any new points except that cross-strait unification would not affect the interests of other countries", said Fan Shih-ping, political analyst at National Taiwan Normal University, adding that Xi's words may also be intended for the U.S., which views Taiwan as part of its Indo-Pacific strategy.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said in a Wednesday statement "the practice of "One Country, Two Systems" in Hong Kong leads to a loss of freedom, rule of law and human rights".

But when Tsai's party, which leans toward declaring formal independence and is anathema to the mainland government, lost in nationwide local elections two months ago, Beijing cheered the results as a signal that Taiwanese voters rejected her anti-China stance. He did mention the historical completion of the "Three Links" between Taiwan and China and expressed a wish that the outlying ROC islands of Kinmen and Matsu be connected by bridge to China - an idea touted in the past by Kinmen politicians. Over the past year, Beijing has ramped up efforts to isolate Taiwan, through pressuring worldwide companies and airlines to list the territory as part of mainland China.

President Tsai Ing-wen said Tuesday that China must face the fact of the existence of the Republic of Taiwan.

Washington also remains Taipei's most powerful unofficial ally and its main arms supplier despite switching diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1979. Hong Kong has also banned an independence party, calling it a threat to national security, in a move widely seen as bending to Chinese dictates.

MOFA urged the global community to maintain its support for Taiwan and help it to continue to serve as a beacon in the Asia-Pacific region.

Xi hit relatively conciliatory notes - at least for a tough, nationalist leader who has overseen a withering pressure campaign against Taiwan since 2016.

Beijing has adopted a multi-pronged approach to diminish Taiwan's presence on the worldwide stage in recent years, including blocking it from global forums and poaching its dwindling number of official diplomatic allies.
