Amazon scraps plan to build a headquarters in New York City

Why Amazon Gave New York City the Kiss-Off

Still, supporters including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that HQ2 would bring the region significant benefits, including economic diversity.

The proposal ran into opposition from local politicians who opposed the almost $US3 billion ($4.25 billion) in incentives promised to Amazon in a deal secretly negotiated by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City mayor Bill de Blasio. It's a big reversal of its much-hyped decision to build a new headquarters in Queens after a highly publicized nationwide search.

This morning, instead of flowers, the city woke up to a break-up text in the form of a press release, announcing Amazon will pull out of its planned HQ2 development in Long Island City, Queens. The Seattle-based retailer had promised to build 25,000 jobs and invest $2.5 billion development of waterfront property in Queens in exchange for almost $3 billion in state and local tax breaks.

The huge digital company announced Thursday that it has ended its effort to make New York City part of its sprawling empire, just four months after proclaiming the Big Apple as its future HQ2 home. One outspoken opponent of the deal was recently named to a state control board with veto power over the transaction.

Following a yearlong public search for a new second headquarters dubbed HQ2, Amazon in November announced plans to build two 25,000-employee campuses, one in Long Island City, Queens, in NY, and another in Arlington, Virginia.

Northern Virginia and New York City were both given parts of the enormous HQ2 project last November. "New York City is today one of the most dynamic tech hubs in the world, but there is no guarantee we will maintain this status in the future, which makes this news so disappointing". It instead focuses on how Amazon would have looked forward to establishing a presence in the state.

It would appear that Amazon is putting a hold on their Headquarters 2 (HQ2) search at this time.

Amazon said the deal would have created more than 25,000 jobs.

"I think it's incredible". That complex would have housed 25,000 employees.

"Either they are really good poker players or they were not aware", Greenberg said of the Amazon representatives.

The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union called out Amazon's actions as irresponsible.

In a joint letter today addressed to "Dear Amazon", Emanuel and Pritzker said whatever happened in the Big Apple, "We want to assure you that Chicago, our surrounding communities and the state of IL remain ready to welcome HQ2 to our city, and to ensure a smooth and successful transition and launch". Jeff Bezos had the opportunity to listen to the voices of working families and support the good-paying jobs New Yorkers deserve. She said Walmart was forced to give up coming to New York City after similar opposition from union supporters.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, a big cheerleader for the project, laid the blame on Amazon for walking away.

"I hope this is the start of a conversation about vulture capitalism and where our tax dollars are best spent", wrote New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson. Loud criticism mounted quickly after the deal was announced, including from Ocasio-Cortez.

It seems like Amazon couldn't make it in the Big Apple after all. Expanding in the face of those objections could have tarnished Amazon's brand.
