Hakeem al-Araibi arrives back in Australia

Bill Shorten wants to meet with the detained man's wife

Dozens of supporters were at Tullamarine Airport to meet him, holding signs and banners.

An Interpol red notice had been issued for Araibi's detention by Bahrain, but the notice should never have been issued as refugees can not be returned to the country from which they have fled. It also ended a tense diplomatic spat between Australia and Bahrain which had Thailand torn between the two Governments. He's expected to land in Melbourne for a hero's welcome about 1pm.

Former Socceroos captain Foster led the campaign to free Al-Araibi, who had been detained in a Bangkok jail since late November after Interpol flagged a red notice for his arrest.

Human rights group Amnesty International, which had lobbied for his release, welcomed Thailand's move.

Al-Araibi fled Bahrain in 2014 and was granted refugee status by Australia where he plays soccer for semi-professional Melbourne club Pascoe Vale.

But the soccer player disputed the charges, telling The New York Times that his innocence was easily documented because he appeared in a live televised match at the time of the incident.

He is wanted for damaging a police station but the former national youth footballer says the case is bogus and tied to his criticism of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, a member of Bahrain's ruling family.

Bahrain's foreign ministry said that despite the end of court extradition proceedings, the footballer's conviction still stood.

In addition to thanking Thailand, Morrison said Australians "greatly appreciate their listening to the issues that have been raised by our government and many others who have raised this case".

Mr al-Araibi's wife issued a statement thanking people for the support that had been offered to her husband.

"Now the next step is for him to return home", Morrison told reporters in Canberra.

Al-Araibi has said he was blindfolded and had his legs beaten when he was held in Bahrain previously.

While he acknowledged the work of FIFA Secretary-General Fatma Samoura for escalating FIFA's response, he called out the organisation for not doing more, and said anyone in positions of leadership across sport who din't act to save al-Araib should be "expunged".

He said Federation Internationale de Football Association has not discussed imposing sanctions on either Bahrain or Thailand over the case.

"We fought for one soul because Hakeem represented everyone who suffers under tyranny, and through him, we hope to build a better world".

Bahraini footballer Hakeem al-Araibi, who was facing an extradition trial in Bangkok since his detention in November a year ago, was heading back to Australia last night after the Bahraini authorities chose to withdraw their extradition request.

On Monday, the Thai attorney-general's office confirmed the extradition case against Mr Al-Araibi had been dropped and he would be free to return to Australia.

It was not immediately clear what prompted Bahrain to withdraw its request.
