Liberal MP joins opposition call for investigation into SNC-Lavalin controversy

Trudeau in ethics probe over handling of Libyan contract fraud

Wilson-Raybould shepherded legislation to allow medical assistance in dying, prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression, and to legalize cannabis.

But in a letter to the prime minister announcing her resignation on Tuesday, Ms Wilson-Raybould said that she is "aware that many Canadians wish for me to speak on matters that have been in the media over the last week".

This major exemption, combined with the testy letter she released following Trudeau's decision to remove her from her role as AG, in which she made special note that Canada's legal system must "be free from even the perception of political interference", certainly raises some questions about Trudeau's involvement or lack thereof in the SNC Lavalin case. Wilson-Raybould quit on Tuesdau amid news reports that she was pressured to go easy on a major firm a year ago. "This work must and will carry on".

Her resignation as veterans affairs minister comes as a controversy engulfs the government from her time as attorney general and allegations that Trudeau's office pressured her not to prosecute Montreal firm SNC-Lavalin on corruption charges.

Trudeau has denied any wrongdoing and Wilson-Raybould has cited solicitor-client privilege when asked to explain what happened.

Who is Jody Wilson-Raybould?

.

The opposition has called on Trudeau to waive that privilege, but when asked if he would, Trudeau said that option is still under review.

Jody Wilson-Raybould made her resignation letter public on February 12, 2019.

"They perpetuate colonial-era, sexist stereotypes that Indigenous women can not be powerful, forthright, and steadfast in positions of power, but rather confrontational, meddling and egotistic".

The prime minister warned, however, that his ability to comment might be limited by the fact that there are ongoing court proceedings involving the Quebec company.

Wilson-Raybould, who the Globe and Mail said had ignored the pressure, was demoted from the justice ministry last month.

Trudeau has lost a unique voice in cabinet, especially on issues that are keenly important to British Columbians, said Ginger Gosnell-Myers, an Indigenous rights researcher and a former Aboriginal relations manager for the City of Vancouver.

Garrison Settee, grand chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc., a group representing 30 First Nations in northern Manitoba, echoed that sentiment.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada David Lametti responds to a question during Question Period in the House of Commons Thursday February 7, 2019 in Ottawa.

Wilson-Raybould's father told Kapelos that this government is not making progress on reconciliation.

Perry Bellegarde, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said in a statement that he was "saddened" by Wilson-Raybould's departure, noting that many First Nations people celebrated her appointment to the justice portfolio as a "testament to her expertise, experience and intellect".

Wilson-Raybould will, however, be staying on as an MP in Vancouver-Granville.

"It disgusts me", Wilson added.
