Measles cases reported in several Houston-area communities

Measles case confirmed in Central Texas

Recently, Fort Worth, Plano, Houston and Austin were singled out as anti-vaccine "hotspots" because a number of Texas families are opting out of vaccines, according to a study in PLOS Medicine.

Six measles cases have been confirmed in Central Texas as of February 6. The woman is reported to be between the ages of 25 and 35, and the boys are both younger than 2. Five of the cases involve children, at least some of whom had received one round of the vaccination.

The United States outbreaks, which are defined as 3 or more cases, are in New York State, New York City and Washington State.

The Center has reported three outbreaks; the outbreaks are associated with travelers, who "brought measles back from Israel and Ukraine".

Measles can be prevented with the MMR vaccine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children get the first dose of that vaccine between 12 and 15 months and the second dose between ages 4 and 6.

Measles is a highly contagious virus spread through direct contact or through the air.

Demand for measles vaccine has surged in the Washington county where the highly contagious virus is linked to more than 50 confirmed illnesses this year - including among people who had previously shunned the shots.

A hallmark of measles is a rash that begins as flat, red spots on the face and spreads down the neck to the rest of the body. Officials say they had stayed at home and in contact with health officials.

The health department did not say where specifically the case was in order to protect patient confidentiality. A New York Department of Health official confirmed to ABC News last week that there were 30 confirmed cases to date in New York so far this year, and 122 confirmed cases in 2018.
