Possible MLB rule changes may have little effect on Pirates

Commissioner Rob Manfred

If you're a National League enthusiast, you should probably start mentally preparing for a drastic change in your baseball fandom.

Owners meetings are scheduled for this week and spring training begins next week. "There are always ways to improve the game and speed up the game and speed up the action".

If you're a fan of a National League team, or just a baseball purist who is sick and exhausted of the designated hitter, you don't have to worry.

Major League Baseball wants pitch clocks and further restrictions on mound visits without pitching changes. The current deal expires at the end of the 2021 season, but MLB would be open to major changes as part of an extension of the current deal.

While pitch clocks are possible for this season, some changes are more likely to evolve slowly.

The competition committee met Wednesday and the executive council Thursday, and a full owners session is scheduled for Friday.

Among the proposed changes, the union requested a universal designated hitter be implemented ahead of the 2019 season, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Both sides will continue to negotiate potential changes to the game during the offseason. "And I hope we can focus on some of the issues that need to get resolved quickly in the interim". After that, however, those fans might have to adapt to some changes.

He continued: "I think historically some of our biggest stars (are) starting pitchers and we want to make sure those big stars are out there long enough that that they are marketed".

What has been known as the "disabled list" for more than five decades, will from now on be referred to as the "injured list".

Clubs were notified of the change in a December 20 memo to clubs from Jeff Pfeifer, senior director of league economics and operations in the commissioner's office.

ESPN first reported one proposal includes a study to lower the pitching mound.

"In recent years, the commissioner has received several inquiries regarding the name of the "Disabled List, '" Pfeifer wrote". All standards and requirements for placement, reinstatement, etc., shall remain unchanged. "This change, which is only a rebranding of the name itself, is effective immediately".

Major League Baseball is reportedly renaming its "disabled list" over concerns that the language gives the wrong impression of what it is to have a disability.
