Road crews on standby for flooding ahead of Storm Erik

Storm Erik to hit Limerick as Met Eireann issues nationwide wind warning

Erik hit the coast of Ireland early this morning, posing an immediate danger of storm surges and heavy winds.

Despite The Met Office's yellow warning of wind during Friday and Saturday for Berkshire being cancelled, heavy rain and strong winds are expected across the county throughout Friday, February 8.

"Very high seas as well with some coastal flooding".

The weather assessment team at Galway city council have analysed the latest information from Met Éireann and the OPW Tide & Surge site and have been in contact with the Galway Harbour master.

The Met Office warned that travel delays throughout the day were very likely, with the risk of fallen trees blocking roads and railways and high winds closing bridges and ferry routes.

The Met Office said Erik would bring strong winds to parts of the country on Friday and will be followed by rain and more unsettled weather.

Storm Erik is making its presence known as the weekend comes into focus.

Issued this morning at 9:00am, the warning is set to affect counties Galway, Mayo and Donegal.

The slow moving low pressure continues to nudge NE wards overnight with bands of heavy rain, squally winds and hefty showers swirling around the storm.

Severe gusts of up to 130km/h are expected, with average wind speeds of up to 80km/h.

The Road Safety Authority has advised road users to exercise caution on roads while the warnings are in place.
