Unemployment in India is at its highest in 45 years

6 ways all Indians can have a guaranteed income

Business Standard Thursday reported that the NSSO survey on employment and unemployment figures for 2017-18 showed high levels of joblessness in both urban and rural areas, in the aftermath of the Modi government's decision to demonetise high value currency notes.

The gloomy jobs data could be awkward for Modi's Hindu nationalist government to explain with a general election looming and opinion polls already showing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party unlikely to keep its parliamentary majority.

The rate of joblessness among the rural males in the age group of 15 to 29 years jumped more than three times to 17.4 per cent in 2017-18 compared to 5 per cent in 2011-12, the statement said, adding that unemployment rate of rural female youths stood at 13.6 per cent compared to 4.8 per cent in the same period. When the data is ready we will release it. Data collection method is different now; we are using a computer assisted personal interviewee in the new survey.

NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said that India's growth rate is 7.2 per cent. The Fuhrer promised us 2 crore jobs a year. "Once you say that the NSSO has not done the right job right now that's the reason why the report was not made public, then that's a fair enough argument".

Earlier, the NSSO, a division of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), released data that suggested that unemployment in India stood at 6.1 percent in 2017-18, the highest in 45 years.

The report was not released despite being vetted by the National Statistical Commission in December, allege two non-independent members who quit the data collating body on Tuesday.

Refusing to comment on the content of the news report, he said the government will release its employment report by March after collating quarter-on-quarter data.

"Even if the government was still processing quarterly estimates for urban areas, it would have the data from July 2017-June 2018".

Though India's economy has been expanding by 7 percent plus annually, uneven growth has meant that new jobs are not keeping pace.

Pronab Sen, former chief statistician of India said unemployment in the India has been rising since 2012 but the attempts to suppress the publication of data was not a solution.

Earlier this month, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, a leading independent think-tank, said the country lost as many as 11 million jobs previous year.

"This suppression of data is a clear admission on the part of the Modi government that its policies have resulted in greater misery for our people".
