DC Comics Artist Calls Captain Marvel A Disgrace

Review ‘Captain Marvel’ is a four-star spectacle as Brie Larson’s hero conquers villains onscreen and online

Will this movie serve as a cultural sea change that will bring about a fresh wave of female-led blockbusters?

Ms. Danvers has no such luck, and Larson - an Oscar-winner whose natural protectiveness is poorly served by such a self-satisfied character - has little to do beyond mug for the camera and spout third-rate one-liners to any of the men who get in her way. It is, to be honest, nearly too much for a single review to cover, and more than any one film should be forced to stand for.

Captain Marvel" star Brie Larson publicly lamented last year that "67% of the top critics reviewing the 100 highest-grossing movies in 2017 were white males", and added, "I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn't work for him about 'A Wrinkle in Time.' It wasn't made for him.

Like Jackson's impeccably executed de-aging, the visual effects that accompany the Skrulls and their shape-shifting transformations are all incredibly well done, with animation that blends seamlessly in with the practical effects used on the Skrulls' natural green-skinned forms. The attack forced RT to end the audience voting system for good - at least until a film has been released.

The film begins on Hala, the homeward of the noble Kree, a race of aliens that seems to have no real aesthetic uniformity.

Ben Mendelsohn is likeably amusing as Talos, a deadpan Skrull who somehow speaks with an Australian accent, and whose universal-translatored speech includes terms like "jazz hands", "a bad trip" and "my science guy". She is saved, hauled off to space and given special powers by an elite Kree military force, under the leadership of Yon-Rogg (Jude Law).

And who knew Nick Fury was a cat person? The problem is that this blankness robs Larson of any character to build or, really, act. That ends up being one of the movie's most fun moments.

What you'll find is considerable amount of humour, a depiction of actual female friendship and mentorship (the emotional heart of the movie), Ben Mendelsohn's entertaining yet layered Skrull commander, serious 90s nostalgia value (with an awesome period soundtrack to boot) and a delightful bond between Samuel L. Jackson's de-aged Nick Fury and Goose the cat. His incredulous-but-game acceptance of a situation involving aliens and superpowers nearly makes you wonder what this film would be like if it were willing to be less of a superhero film and more of a buddy-cop comedy. Larson's Vers is like someone trapped in a matrix - she has to shake off the dream of who she is to locate the superwoman she could be. This leads to a couple of moments of, "Wait, what just happened?" or, "Why would they believe her?" that could have been avoided with a more carefully paced script, or, in a ideal world, a more thoroughly constructed preamble in another movie altogether. Really though; how can anyone expect that this film will create a new role model for girls when it can barely create a convincing earthling, regardless of gender? Carol Danvers is as unapologetically brash and bold as a hero could be, even when it gets her into trouble, and it's oh so satisfying.

Larson is an actor of tremendous skill and presence, and Boden and Fleck are talented screenwriters and directors.

Captain Marvel turns out to be imbued with great powers, so great that she is basically unstoppable when in a full rage.

Brie Larson attends the Marvel Studios Captain Marvel premiere on March 04, 2019 in Hollywood.

Despite featuring the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first woman lead character, Captain Marvel sticks to the overarching franchise formula. Sadly, it will rarely if ever allow for those strengths to cohere into something more than the sum of their parts.

In a piece titled "Why the Internet is Buzzing About a Gay Marvel Character That Doesn't Exist (Yet)", Esquire reported Tuesday, as the early reviews of feminist "Captain Marvel" were streaming, in that "an online rumor suggests that Marvel is on the hunt for its first gay superhero for The Eternals".
