Erdogan says New Zealand attack shows growing hostility to Islam

Armed police following a shooting at the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch New Zealand

"The situation is still unfolding but our thoughts and prayers are with our Kiwi cousins".

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has described the gunman, who had Australian citizenship as "extremist, right-wing" terrorist.

"My warmest sympathy and best wishes goes out to the people of New Zealand after the awful massacre in the Mosques", he tweeted.

"You may have chosen us but we utterly reject and condemn you".

His manifesto was a welter of often politically contradictory views, touching on numerous most combustible issues of the day, among them the Second Amendment right to own guns, Muslim immigration, terrorist attacks and the wealthiest 1 per cent.

"New Zealand is one of the most peaceful, peace-loving and generous nations in the world".

At least 49 people were killed and 50 others were injured during the rampage.

Police said the second mosque attack was in the suburb of Linwood, but gave no details.

One man was arrested and charged with murder in what appeared to be a carefully planned racist attack.

"We must stand against Islamaphobia and all hate". Our sympathies are with the families of the deceased and our prayers with those injured.

New Zealand mosque shooting: At least 49 killed after gunmen open fire

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called the incident a terrorist attack in a Friday press conference, saying the suspects held "extremist views" that have no place in New Zealand or the world.

"With this attack, hostility towards Islam that the world has been has been idly watching and even encouraging for some time, has gone beyond the boundaries of individual harassment to reach the level of mass killing", said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A gunman broadcast live stream footage on Facebook of the attack on one mosque in the city of Christchurch, mirroring the carnage played out in video games, after publishing a "manifesto" in which he denounced immigrants, calling them "invaders".

"When the flames of hatred are fanned, when people are demonized due to their faith, when people's fears are played on rather than addressed, the consequences are deadly as we have seen so sadly today", he said.

Entitled "The Great Replacement", the 73-page document said the gunman had wanted to attack Muslims.

"Feeling very sick, that person is brainless and a savage", said one Indonesian twitter user who identified himself as Farhan Adhitama.

Anwar Gargash, the United Arab Emirates' minister of state for foreign affairs, tweeted, "heartfelt condolences" to New Zealand.

"Your friends in the United Kingdom stand with you today in deepest sympathy".

"We New Zealanders were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone this racism, or because we are an enclave of extremism, we were chosen for the very fact that we are none of these things", she said.

Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim mayor of London, said Londoners stood shoulder to shoulder with the people of Christchurch. On Saturday, people across the country were reaching out to Muslims in their communities on social media to volunteer acts of kindness - offering rides to the grocery store or volunteering to walk with them if they felt unsafe.
